Melania Trump announced on Friday that eight Ukrainian children have been reunited with their families following months of talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The U.S. first lady revealed that the breakthrough came after she wrote a personal letter to Putin in August, which was hand-delivered by her husband during his meeting with the Russian leader in Alaska.
Speaking at the White House, Melania said Putin responded to her letter, opening an “active communication channel” focused on the welfare of Ukrainian children taken to Russia since the invasion began. “We have agreed to cooperate with each other for the benefit of all people involved in this war,” she stated.
According to the first lady, the reunifications occurred within the last 24 hours. The development marks a rare humanitarian success amid ongoing international condemnation of Russia’s actions. The International Criminal Court previously issued an arrest warrant for Putin over the abduction of Ukrainian children during the war.
