The Trump administration has gained legal approval to move forward with its plan to block Planned Parenthood from receiving Medicaid reimbursements, a move critics warn could shutter hundreds of clinics across the United States.

A federal appeals court lifted a previous injunction that had prevented the administration from enforcing a one-year ban on Planned Parenthood’s participation in Medicaid. The decision could impact up to 200 clinics, many of which serve patients in rural and medically underserved areas.

Planned Parenthood estimates that more than 1.1 million of its patients rely on Medicaid for essential services such as cancer screenings, contraception, and STI testing. Advocates warn the loss of funding will leave vulnerable communities without adequate healthcare access.

“This is a backdoor abortion ban,” said Alexis McGill Johnson, Planned Parenthood’s chief executive. She cautioned that patients will face longer wait times, increased travel burdens, and reduced access to preventive care if clinics are forced to close.

Although federal law already prohibits Medicaid dollars from funding abortion procedures, opponents of abortion have long sought to exclude Planned Parenthood from the program entirely. Litigation in the case is set to continue in the coming weeks, with the appeals court scheduled to hear further arguments.

For many patients, Planned Parenthood remains a vital provider. “There’s no backup plan,” said Dominique Lee, president of Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts. “Planned Parenthood is the safety net.”
