The United States has revoked the visas of at least 50 Mexican politicians and government officials as part of President Donald Trump’s intensified campaign against drug cartels and their suspected political allies. The sweeping cancellations, which include members of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s ruling Morena party, have unsettled Mexico’s political elite and strained diplomatic ties.

According to senior Mexican and US sources, this move represents one of the most extensive uses of visa revocation as a diplomatic tool in recent years. Former ambassadors say Trump’s approach marks a clear departure from previous administrations, using visa policy to apply pressure on foreign governments.

Among those affected is Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila, who denied any connection to organized crime. While US law allows for visa revocation without explanation, officials stated the action aligns with national security interests. “Visas, including those held by foreign officials, may be revoked at any time for activities contrary to America’s national interest,” a US official said.

The crackdown extends beyond Mexico. Similar actions have targeted officials in Colombia, Brazil, and Costa Rica — including former Costa Rican President and Nobel laureate Óscar Arias. Analysts warn that this approach could backfire, potentially weakening cooperation between Washington and Mexico in the fight against organized crime.
