The United States announced that immigration applications will now be reviewed for signs of anti-American views, including through expanded monitoring of applicants’ social media activity.

Officials said the new rules are designed to ensure that residency and citizenship benefits are not granted to individuals who promote ideologies hostile to the country. Immigration authorities will screen for expressions of hostility toward American culture, institutions, or founding principles, as well as for support of antisemitic ideologies.

The move reflects a broader tightening of visa and residency approvals, with recent measures requiring more rigorous social media checks before granting entry or legal status. Authorities emphasized that immigration benefits are considered a privilege, not a right, and will be denied to those who undermine US values.

Critics warn the expanded vetting could target political speech and restrict academic or cultural exchange, while supporters argue it is necessary to protect national security and safeguard the nation’s interests.
