Golf veteran John Daly made history for the wrong reason after carding a 19 on the par-5 12th hole during the Sanford International, the highest single-hole score ever recorded on the PGA Tour Champions.
The two-time major winner struggled mightily on the 12th, hitting his tee shot into the rough before finding the water hazard seven consecutive times. After finally clearing the obstacle, Daly needed 17 strokes to reach the green and finished the hole with a score of 19.
The previous record for the highest single-hole score on the PGA Tour Champions was 16, set by three players, most recently in 1996. Daly’s score surpassed that mark by three shots. Ironically, at Bay Hill in 1998, Daly had set his personal worst with an 18 on a par-5 after repeated water shots.
Despite the setback, Daly carried on and completed his round with an 88. His playing partners, Stephen Ames and Angel Cabrera, fared far better, with Cabrera leading the tournament at 64 on his 56th birthday.
