Cooper Lutkenhaus, the youngest American ever to compete at the World Athletics Championships, saw his debut end in the heats after finishing seventh in his 800m race in Tokyo.

The 16-year-old Texan, who came second at the U.S. trials, clocked 1:47.68 — well below his personal best of 1:42.27 that ranks him among the fastest juniors in history. Despite strong training performances, he admitted his sprint finish wasn’t there on the day. “It’s like failing a math test occasionally, but you come back. I’m excited for what the future holds,” Lutkenhaus said.

Though disappointed, the Northwest High School junior left the track proud to have raced against the world’s best. “I don’t really have any regrets,” he added. “You’re gonna have bad races occasionally.” After competition, he plans to enjoy some downtime in Tokyo, though he reminded reporters, “I still have homework to do on this trip.”

Balancing sport and school, Lutkenhaus says education remains his top priority. “This sport doesn’t last forever. To have a solid education is number one,” he said, expressing interest in studying kinesiology.
