Instagram is testing a feature that could be a dream come true for social multitaskers: Picture-in-Picture (PiP) for Reels. This new functionality, currently in a limited trial, allows users to keep watching videos while replying to messages or using other apps, making the platform more integrated with daily communication.

The way it works is simple and intuitive. If you’re watching a Reel and navigate away from the app, the video will automatically resize into a small, movable window that stays on your screen. This seamless transition is designed to prevent the common frustration of having to choose between entertainment and conversation, allowing for both to occur simultaneously.

This is a strategic enhancement that also serves the platform’s creator community. By making it easier for viewers to finish videos without interruption, Instagram is helping creators achieve better watch time and completion rates. This can lead to better performance in the algorithm and wider reach for their content. As usual, users will have the option to disable this feature if they prefer.

This multitasking update is complemented by another major release: a native application for the iPad. The new app offers an optimized experience for the larger screen, making it easier and more enjoyable to view and engage with content, solidifying Instagram’s presence across all major devices.
