Donald Trump has claimed that Chinese President Xi Jinping personally assured him China would not attempt to invade Taiwan while Trump remains in office.
Speaking in an interview, Trump said Xi told him he would “never do it as long as you’re president,” while also stressing that China is “very patient.” Trump added that he does not believe an invasion is likely during his term but acknowledged that the long-term situation remains uncertain.
The comments come amid heightened global concerns over tensions in the Taiwan Strait. China continues to view Taiwan as its territory and has pledged to pursue “reunification,” including the use of force if necessary. Taiwan, meanwhile, firmly rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims.
While the United States has no formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, it remains the island’s primary international supporter and arms supplier, a position that has consistently drawn strong opposition from Beijing.
