In a significant development for the U.S. manufacturing sector, President Donald Trump has unveiled plans for a massive $15 billion steel plant to be constructed in eastern Iowa. This venture, described as the largest steel facility of its kind in American history, is spearheaded by Mesabi Metallics, a steel company under the ownership of India-based Essar Group.
The steel plant is slated to commence production in 2030 and will utilize iron ore sourced from Mesabi Metallics’ mine in Minnesota to produce high-quality steel for the domestic market. The ambitious project is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities, with up to 6,000 jobs anticipated during the construction phase and nearly 2,000 jobs in manufacturing and mining once operational.
The expansion is receiving considerable federal backing, with the U.S. Export-Import Bank providing up to $10 billion in financing support. According to Rewant Ruia, chairman of Mesabi Metallics, the majority of critical materials for the plant will be sourced from within the United States, although some specialized materials may require importation.
President Trump attributed this initiative to his administration’s tariffs on imported goods, which he claims have encouraged businesses to invest in domestic manufacturing capabilities. This announcement comes at a strategic time as Iowa gears up for the 2026 Senate election, where industrial investment and job creation are poised to be key political issues.
