The trailer for Whalefall, a gritty survival thriller starring Austin Abrams, has been released. Based on Daniel Kraus’ acclaimed novel of the same name, the film follows a young man who finds himself trapped inside a massive sperm whale with only a limited amount of oxygen to survive.
The film, from 20th Century Studios and Imagine Entertainment, is scheduled to release in Indian theatres on October 16.
Austin Abrams plays a desperate diver
Abrams stars as Jay Gardiner, a young man dealing with the death of his father, played by Josh Brolin. Jay travels to the Central Coast of California and goes diving in search of his father’s remains.
His mission takes a terrifying turn when a giant sperm whale swallows him whole.
Trapped inside the whale, Jay has only about an hour of oxygen left. With no obvious way out, he is forced to rely on his instincts and the lessons his father taught him as he searches for a way to survive.
A survival story with an emotional core
The trailer combines underwater adventure with claustrophobic survival elements, while also focusing on Jay’s relationship with his late father.
Director, co-writer and producer Brian Duffield said the production team spent the summer filming inside a whale set constructed on a sound stage in Studio City, California.
The film is directed by Duffield, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Kraus. It is based on Kraus’ original novel.
Cast and release
Alongside Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin, Whalefall stars Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd.
With its unusual premise, underwater setting and intense survival storyline, Whalefall brings a modern take to the classic survival narrative of a person trapped in an impossible situation.
The film is set to arrive in Indian theatres on October 16.
