Under the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico is revitalizing its security collaboration with the United States, signaling a departure from the tense relations that characterized the tenure of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. A central figure in this renewed partnership is Omar García Harfuch, the Security Cabinet coordinator, who has engaged in multiple discussions with high-ranking US officials. These meetings have primarily focused on intelligence sharing and tackling organized crime, with Mexican authorities reporting quicker responses to criminal activities due to improved information exchange.
Since Sheinbaum took office, there have been notable advancements in Mexico’s law enforcement efforts. Authorities have documented the arrest of tens of thousands of individuals, the seizure of significant quantities of weapons and drugs, and the dismantling of numerous clandestine drug labs. Additionally, Mexico has expedited the extradition of prominent criminal suspects to the United States, while officials note a marked decrease in fentanyl trafficking. This new phase of cooperation represents a significant shift from the approach taken during López Obrador’s presidency, which saw the closure of a US intelligence unit in Mexico and the imposition of stricter regulations on foreign security personnel.
The relationship between the two nations had further deteriorated following the 2020 detention of former Defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos and disputes over organized crime investigations. In 2024, tensions escalated when allegations surfaced linking drug-trafficking funds to López Obrador’s 2006 presidential campaign, although these allegations did not result in formal charges. Despite these past challenges, the current administration is working to restore trust and foster closer ties with US authorities.
While the renewed cooperation demonstrates a commitment to joint efforts against organized crime, President Sheinbaum remains firm on maintaining Mexico’s sovereignty. Her administration emphasizes the necessity of mutual respect in the bilateral relationship and has criticized perceived attempts by US officials to influence Mexico’s security leadership. Consequently, both nations are navigating a cautious path, aiming for enhanced coordination while ensuring that intelligence cooperation aligns with Mexico’s national interests.
