In a significant step towards modernizing Selma, Alabama, the Selma Housing Authority, Metro Digital Group, and an assembly of educational and civic leaders have unveiled plans for the Selma Digital Innovation Center. This initiative aims to pave the way for the city, known for its historical importance, to embrace a future infused with innovation and economic vitality. The center will occupy a historic building at 528 Washington Avenue, transforming it into a hub for workforce development, technology, AI, and digital innovation, catering to students, young adults, entrepreneurs, and the broader community.
Collins Pettaway Jr., President of Progress Partners for Selma, expressed that the project signifies more than just a building redevelopment. It is an investment in creating infrastructure that opens up future opportunities for Selma. As technology continues to rapidly reshape the workforce landscape, Pettaway emphasized the necessity for Selma to adapt and thrive in an evolving digital economy. The Selma Digital Innovation Center’s development is a result of a public-private collaboration involving the Mayor’s Office, the Housing Authority of Selma, Selma City Schools, Selma University, Wallace Community College Selma, and Metro Digital Group, among others.
The center is expected to feature diverse facilities, including gaming and esports environments, AI and STEM labs, media production spaces, and community event areas. Shaon Berry, President of Metro Digital Group, highlighted the honor of partnering with local institutions on this transformative project that aims to bridge Selma’s historical legacy with a future focused on innovation and economic empowerment. The initiative aligns with Metro’s mission to foster inclusive technology ecosystems that promote long-term economic mobility and workforce readiness in underserved communities.
Local leaders have underscored the symbolic and practical significance of the project as Selma endeavors to enhance its economic development, education, and community revitalization efforts. Selma Councilwoman Lesia James pointed out that partnerships like this are crucial for the city’s future, as they open up new opportunities for the youth and residents. Progress Partners Vice President John Deamer added that the center is designed to meet the community members where they are, offering exposure to future-facing industries and career paths.
Scheduled to commence its design and construction planning in June 2026, with an anticipated opening in 2027, the Selma Digital Innovation Center is currently engaging potential partners and sponsors to support its long-term vision. Roger Blackmon, Director of Technology at Progress Partners, expressed enthusiasm about the innovative design of the technology rooms, which he believes will inspire students and families alike to engage in learning and creativity. The initiative, spearheaded by Progress Partners for Selma, established in November 2025, continues to seek collaborations that will drive economic development and community pride.
