Ryder Cup organisers have asked President Donald Trump to delay his arrival at Bethpage on the tournament’s opening day to avoid potential security chaos. Officials fear a repeat of the long queues and delays caused by Trump’s recent visit to the US Open tennis final in New York.
The organisers prefer that Trump attend the event later in the day, ideally during lunch or the afternoon session, rather than at the start of Friday morning play. With around 50,000 spectators expected each day and most aiming to watch the opening tee shots, officials say any disruption could affect thousands of fans who have paid up to $750 for tickets.
The PGA of America confirmed that discussions are ongoing, stressing their main priority is delivering a “seamless, secure and first-class event” for attendees. European captain Luke Donald acknowledged that security around a presidential visit is always complex but said both teams are prepared for the added attention.
Trump, who has a long association with golf, is also set to showcase his involvement in the sport with confirmation that his Doonbeg resort in Ireland will host the Irish Open in 2026.
