In a significant move to address the growing complexities and risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI), US President Donald Trump has announced the formation of a new initiative, the “Super Intelligence Force.” This task force aims to coordinate AI policy at the federal level and assess potential risks posed by advanced AI technologies. Leading the initiative is National Intelligence Director Jay Clayton, who will oversee efforts to uphold US technological leadership while tackling emerging security concerns.
The task force will delve into AI-related risks across various sectors such as financial services, energy, transportation, agriculture, and emergency services. Its remit also includes examining cybersecurity, biosecurity, water infrastructure, civil liberties, and the safeguards required for advanced AI systems. Key federal agencies, including the Pentagon, Justice Department, Department of Homeland Security, and Federal Trade Commission, are expected to contribute to this comprehensive effort.
According to the initiative’s charter, the task force has a 120-day deadline to provide recommendations to President Trump on AI-related risks, security standards, and the implications of excessive regulation. The group may also consider whether AI labs should report security breaches and hacking incidents. Vice chairs of the task force include FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael, and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor. Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth are among its members, with former AI adviser David Sacks and ex-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice named as external participants.
Despite the administration’s efforts, the initiative has faced criticism from Democratic lawmakers. They argue that meaningful protections may not be enforceable without congressional action. However, the administration maintains that AI oversight must prioritize security and public safety risks while avoiding unnecessary restrictions on technological innovation.
