Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, negotiators from the United States, held discussions in Kyiv with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday. The talks aimed to make headway in resolving the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Their visit to Ukraine followed a meeting in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin just a day earlier. Witkoff described the conversation with Zelenskyy as both “constructive and substantive,” and expressed optimism about the potential for broader talks involving the US, Ukraine, and European nations in the near future.
In Kyiv, the negotiations briefly included the national security advisers from Britain, France, and Germany. President Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s desire to initiate trilateral discussions with the United States and European allies to push forward the peace process. He also highlighted the importance of continued support from Western countries, especially as Ukraine braces for another challenging winter. Key areas of concern include bolstering air defense, securing energy aid, and increasing the supply of liquefied natural gas from the US.
Despite efforts towards peace, negotiations have been stagnant due to significant disagreements, primarily over territorial control in eastern Ukraine. Previous talks have revolved around a 20-point peace plan developed by Washington and Kyiv, but no consensus has been reached with Russia on several critical aspects. Meanwhile, Russian military actions continue to affect Ukraine, with recent reports indicating that at least eight people were killed and 69 injured due to the strikes across the country. Kyiv, in particular, has been under persistent drone attacks, and there is a pressing need for more US-made Patriot interceptor missiles.
As the conflict nears its fifth year, Ukrainian officials are increasingly worried about the possibility of further Russian assaults targeting their energy infrastructure. They are especially concerned about potential escalations in attacks during the winter months, which could exacerbate the already challenging situation for the Ukrainian population. Maintaining a robust defense and ensuring energy security remain top priorities for Ukraine as it navigates this protracted conflict.
