Donald Trump has expressed skepticism over the ceasefire agreement with Iran, describing it as being on “life support.” The former U.S. president mentioned that he is contemplating resuming U.S. naval escorts for ships navigating the Strait of Hormuz, with the goal of ending the Iranian blockade of this crucial maritime passage.

Trump was dismissive of Iran’s peace proposals, labeling them as “stupid,” and he denied facing any domestic pressure to negotiate a deal. Addressing the ceasefire, which has been in place since April 7, Trump commented, “I would call it the weakest, right now, after reading that piece of garbage they sent us – I didn’t even finish reading it.” He likened the ceasefire to a dire medical situation, saying it is on “massive life support.”

Recently, the United States outlined a set of conditions for easing tensions, focusing primarily on curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. In response over the weekend, Iran offered counter-proposals, which Trump summarily rejected. Project Freedom, a U.S. initiative to escort oil tankers through the strait, was halted after just a couple of days last week. The suspension was intended to allow time for Iran to respond to U.S. peace overtures. However, the plan faced opposition from Saudi Arabia, which refused to permit the use of its airspace or bases, viewing the move as potentially escalatory.

Trump’s latest remarks were made amid a backdrop of rising oil prices, driven by Iran’s announcement that further talks about lifting the strait blockade would not occur unless its terms were met. Maj Gen Mohammad Ali Jafari, a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, reiterated Iran’s conditions: an end to hostilities on all fronts, the lifting of sanctions, the release of blocked funds, compensation for war damages, and recognition of Iran’s sovereignty over the strait.
