US President Donald Trump has again asserted that his intervention helped prevent a potential nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan during their 2025 military standoff. Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump recalled Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Washington, saying Sharif had praised him for “saving millions of lives” by facilitating a ceasefire between the two nations.
Trump said the conflict between India and Pakistan was “very close to a nuclear war,” claiming his diplomatic efforts brought both sides to the table. The hostilities followed India’s Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people in Jammu and Kashmir. India struck nine terror bases across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, prompting retaliatory drone strikes from Islamabad.
The confrontation ended on May 10, 2025, when both nations announced a ceasefire. Before the official confirmation, Trump had already declared on Truth Social that he had brokered the peace deal. He reiterated his claim that seven aircraft were shot down during the conflict — a statement he has repeated several times since.
Indian Air Force Chief Marshal A.P. Singh previously confirmed that India downed five Pakistani fighter jets and a large surveillance aircraft during Operation Sindoor, highlighting the scale and precision of India’s response.
