The UK government is considering major reductions in visa fees for highly skilled foreign professionals, as part of a strategy to strengthen the country’s position as a hub for innovation and research.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s “global talent taskforce” is reviewing proposals to simplify application procedures and lower costs for academics, scientists, and digital experts seeking to relocate to Britain. Treasury officials are also involved in shaping incentives to ensure that top talent contributes to economic growth.
Currently, the UK’s global talent visa costs £766 per applicant, with additional health fees of £1,035 per person. The government is weighing options that could reduce or even eliminate these costs. The move comes as the US raises charges for skilled foreign workers, with President Donald Trump increasing H-1B visa fees to $100,000.
Officials believe that cutting fees and reducing paperwork could help the UK outcompete the US in attracting researchers, engineers, and innovators. Last year alone, the UK granted 3,901 global talent visas, a 76% increase from the previous year.
The taskforce, chaired by Starmer’s adviser Varun Chandra and science minister Patrick Vallance, is expected to finalize recommendations aimed at ensuring Britain remains a leading destination for world-class talent.
